Legal Compliance Specialist – Gloversville, NY

Maintains FDA/USDA Food Facility Registrations and cancels or applies for new registrations. Provides regulatory insights and guidance to the organization on new governmental agencies proposed rules and regulations. Directs and assists with writing and implementing policies and procedures related to food safety quality assurance and regulatory compliance. Partners and collaborates with cross-functional teams as subject matter expert in regulatory compliance providing critical analysis and insights as required. Monitors the development and assesses the impact of new and proposed changes in laws, ruling and regulations that may impact the company. Develops and submits comments on proposed changes to regulatory agencies as required. Assists Legal Affairs in researching and responding to issues related to litigation and other legal matters. Analyzes and compiles regulatory advice received from trade associations, outside counsel and other resources. Provides regulatory support throughout new product development process by researching proposed ingredients, claims, third party certifications and marketing strategies. Reviews domestic and international product labels (including ingredient statements, nutrition facts, nutrient content claims, health claims, romance copy and other statements provided on pack), marketing materials, digital assets, and other forms of product advertising for regulatory compliance and legal. Assists with development and execution of food safety and regulatory business strategies in coordination with Spanish parent company.  Develops, maintains standards pertaining to food safety and regulatory compliance. Develops and leads food safety and quality cured meat audits in accordance with globally recognized standards. Supports annual mock recall simulations exercise programs across enterprise.  Assists, as necessary, in execution of product recalls, market withdrawals, regulatory and legal. Supports contract manufacturing programs to ensure compliance to Espuna food safety and quality management systems and applicable regulatory and legal requirements.  Works with cross-functional departments in preparing and reviewing contracts, NDAs, professional service and vendor agreements and related legal documents. Must have Master’s in Law or foreign equivalent and 18 months experience as Legal Compliance Specialist or in compliance position.  Eighteen months experience to include: 18 months experience and aptitude to read, interpret and provide written analysis of current and proposed regulatory text. 18 months experience with procedural processes and regulatory environments including experience in developing and implementing compliance processes and policies. 18 months prior work experience with a law firm, corporate legal or compliance department with one year of operational or procedural experience. 1 year prior experience working with or acting as a liaison with a government regulatory body required. 1 year experience in food processing industry. Travel 2-3x per year to headquarters in Spain for training and coordination with Legal and Quality Control Departments.
